Space Marine 40K version 2

Well, this model has had a turbulent history. It was made by Chris Glenn, Jeremy Bone and Skillzilla for Quake 3, converted to UT as a beta version by Epic's James Green, then remade as a supposedly final UT version by myself and James Green. James posted the final version on EpicKnights.com, but Polycount accidentally released the beta as if it was the final version, and people started making skins for it. Unfortunately, the final and beta versions were entirely incompatible, causing lots of weird problems.

With the release of Advanced Model Support, a standard set of support files for custom models, I built a version of the Space Marine which would actually work. Here's the result. It can read skin files made for either of the released versions, works over networks (I've tried it over a LAN and on the Internet), doesn't cause package mismatches with either of the previous versions, doesn't require Bonus Pack 4, and is hopefully the final word on this matter.

This version, 2.01, is exactly the same U file, but the UMOD has been adapted for Advanced Model Support 1.01.

Model description

An Adeptus Astartes or "Space Marine" - a genetically-engineered, heavily armoured super-soldier from Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000.

"The Space Marines - Created in the distant past through genetic manipulation and arcane science, Space Marines are Humanity's ultimate warriors, dedicated to the defense of the Emperor and the Imperium of Man. A Space Marine army is a compact force of elite warriors, each one the equivalent of ten normal men. From the steadfast reliablity of a Space Marine Tactical Squad to the alien-blasting power of the Predator Annihilator Tank, a Space Marine Army is flexible enough to defeat any opponent."

Other info (Quake III version)

This is my first effort creating Quake 3 Arena players models, and I think it turned out ok. I learned a lot making it and I hope to take that knowledge and make some seriously cool models. One area I had some trouble with was the skinmapping. The mapping itself wasn't too bad but the skin layout could have used some more work. Another trouble area was the animations. Between lack of experience and fighting with biped (I'm not sure if I can get used to no control curves) the animations we're a little difficult. I learned A LOT in doing these animations. Anyway, this is one area I want to improve on. Basically, I could have redone the animations over and over and they would have been better each time, but I didn't want to work on the same model over and over again. I figured I would release the model as it is and do the next model better.

(note: the Unreal Tournament version does not use these animations, but uses the generic Epic male animations supplied with Advanced Model Support)

Model / gameplay information

Installation and requirements

This model requires Unreal Tournament, upgraded to version 436 or later (download the patch from www.unrealtournament.com or a mirror download like File Planet or Unreality), and Advanced Model Support version 101 by Simon "Psychic_313" McVittie (download it from Paradox Productions or a mirror download).

UMOD version

Windows users

Unzip with Winzip, Power Archiver or similar, and double-click the UMOD. Unreal Tournament version 436 and AMS version 101 are required.

If you have problems with UMOD files, try these pages:

Also, make sure you have all the required files.

Linux and Mac users

Unzip with InfoZip or similar, then install the UMOD with UMODPack (you'll need Perl to run UMODPack) or some other UMOD reader (apparently Westwood made an official Mac UMOD reader).

Server installation

Install as described above, then check the [Engine.GameEngine] section of System\UnrealTournament.ini. You must have the following lines:

ServerPackages=AdvancedModelSupport
ServerPackages=SpaceMarine40Kv2
ServerPackages=SpaceMarine40KSkins

You MUST NOT have these lines, which may be left over from previous versions:

ServerPackages=SpaceMarine40K
ServerPackages=SpaceMarineSkins

In particular, if the SpaceMarine40K line is still present, people will have trouble connecting to your server.

Custom skins

This version supports custom skins designed for the beta version of this model (the ones I'm aware of, Shredder, Mother and ChaosSpaceMarines, have been tested and work perfectly).

However, new skins should follow the format described in Help\AdvancedModels\SpaceMarine40K_Skinning.txt.

The trick where skins with the same 4-letter code share faces will not work if one of the skins is in a beta-style package and one is in a new-style package. This is by design.
